In 1986 Harris O’Blanc open a small restaurant in Hayes, Louisiana. He named it Harris’ Seafood. It started out very small and continued to grow. Before long he added live cajun music and two other rooms. After ten years in business, Harris sold the restaurant to his brother. Matt also ran the restaurant for another ten years and then sold it to me, and I renamed the restaurant Aucoin’s. Hayes is located about twenty minutes outside of Lake Charles and about eight miles off of interstate 10.
On your way into Hayes you pass through rice fields and swamps. It seems as though you are in the middle of nowhere then suddenly this little restaurant appears. As you step out of your car the smell of the food hits your nose and the sound of cajun music hits your ears. The weekends are normally packed with locals visiting with one another, young children dancing in the isles and tourists from all over the world getting a taste of cajun life. Aucoin’s has two large rooms that can be reserved for birthdays, anniversarys, showers, or just a simple get together.
There is live cajun music every Friday and Saturday night starting at 7p.m. by local bands who have been playing this amazing music most of their lives. The menu offers a wide variety of cajun specialties (check out the menu on our "menu page") and beer is served in buckets and pitchers.
So if you want to pass a good time, then take a trip to Hayes, Louisiana and see what a true cajun restaurant is all about.
It will be an experience that you will never forget. Pour de bon manger, essayer Aucoin’s!
